However, because the spinal discs do not receive a lot of blood flow, they can be very stubborn and frustrating to heal properly.

This is actually a very important point to bring up when talking about exercises for a bulging disc, because the spinal discs receive their oxygen and nutrients in a very different way. Remember how we were discussing the fact that each spinal disc has a jelly center?

Well, this jelly center is very important, because the disc will actually store oxygen and nutrients in this jelly for proper healing. So, one of the exercises we’ll be discussing will be helping to refresh this oxygen and nutrient supply so you can experience faster healing.

Alright – now that we have that background, it’s time to talk about some specific exercises for a bulging disc you can do. I’m actually going to give you a routine that you can do, which I use in my clinic for the fastest and best results.

The first exercise I will recommend will require the use of a mini-trampoline, which is a small trampoline that’s about 4 feet wide. They’re very inexpensive, and you can find one at most sports stores.

However, you will not be using the trampoline in the way you might imagine – in other words, you will not be jumping on the trampoline. Basically, I’m going to recommend that you simply stand in the center of the trampoline and march in place. This needs to be a very controlled movement, and you want to make sure you keep your head looking straight ahead and your arms at your side when you are marching.

This exercise should be done for 5 minutes every day. The goal of this exercises for a bulging disc is to improve your balance, which strengthens the smallest muscles that surround the spine. When you strengthen these muscles, it not only balances the spine, but it removes pressure from the discs, allowing them to heal more efficiently.

The next exercise I’ll recommend involves the use of a therapy ball, which is one of those large balls you see in health clubs or physical therapy clinics. Basically, you just want to sit on the ball, and gently bounce up and down, keeping your head looking forward and your arms to your side.

This exercise should be done for 5 minutes every day, and it’s best that you do it immediately following the trampoline exercise we just discussed. This exercise is actually the most important one I’ll be discussing today, because this is the one that’s going to help bring new oxygen and nutrients to the injured disc for faster healing.

Basically, when you bounce on the ball, you are pumping every disc in the spine. This pumping action (called imbibition) is actually pumping new oxygen and nutrients into the disc, and pumping toxins from the injury out of the disc.

Finally, we need to discuss stretching and strengthening exercises for a bulging disc. Stretching should also be done every day, but I recommend that you do your stretches immediately following you do the trampoline and ball exercise. These exercises combined will act as an excellent warm-up and prepare your muscles for your daily activity (which reduces the risk that you will re-injure your bulging disc).

Strengthening exercises, on the other hand, should be done just 3 days per week. These exercises are slightly more aggressive, so I don’t recommend you start these until you’ve been doing the stretches for two weeks. The stretches will prepare you for the strengthening exercises, and you should always stretch before strengthening.

In other words, I would recommend that you start with the trampoline exercise, then the ball exercise, then stretch, and finally strengthen. This routine will gradually warm up the area around the bulging disc, which ensures the fastest result.

This is why most have a hard time finding a treatment for a back disc that will result in lasting relief. The good news is that there are actually a number of treatment of a herniated disc that are effective, and truthfully, it often takes a combination of specific treatments to lead to the end result you are hoping for.

In this article, I’m going to give you 3 simple treatment of a herniated disc that can be done from home, but understand this is only part of the solution – I’ll give you a helpful resource at the end of the article if you’d like to learn more. Each treatment for a back disc that I’m about to recommend needs to be followed as I outline for best results.

The first recommendation I’ll share with you is to use ice. Most people want to use heat with this problem, which is really the worst thing you can do. Heat will aggravate the nerve more, and cause additional swelling in the affected area, which also leads to more pain.

Ice will numb the affected nerve, and slow the inflammatory process, which will result in faster relief. If you want to see the fastest results with ice, you should use real ice rather than a substitute (such as frozen vegetables), and you should place the ice right on the skin over the painful area.

Leave the ice on for 15 minutes maximum, or until you experience numbness, whichever occurs first. Then, repeat the ice treatment every hour – it will require 3 to 4 treatments before you experience any relief, and it usually takes about 3 days to experience a considerable difference in your pain level.

The next treatment for a back disc I will share with you is actually an easy exercise using a therapy ball. A therapy ball is one of those large balls you see in health clubs or physical therapy clinics. People often use them for stomach exercises, however, the exercise I will recommend for you is actually very easy.

Simply sit on the ball and gently bounce up and down for 5 minutes every day. Remember how we were discussing earlier how the jelly in the disc is where the nutrients and oxygen are stored for healing? This exercise will pump every disc in the spine, which pumps new nutrients and oxygen into the disc for faster healing.

The final treatment of a herniated disc I will share today is another exercise using a mini-trampoline. You can find a small trampoline (usually about 4 feet wide) at most sports stores, and you simply want to stand in the center of the trampoline and march in place for 5 minutes each day.

Don’t jump when doing this exercise – marching will force the body to re-balance the muscles in the entire spine, which takes a lot of pressure off the injured disc. This exercise will go a long way for not only alleviating the pain, but also for healing the bulging disc.

Believe it or not, the discs of the spine are actually designed to not feel pain. This makes sense when you consider that the main function is shock absorption. If they could feel pain, you would be hurting with every movement you made!

The spinal nerves are very sensitive, so any amount of pressure from a bulging disc will cause pain. Also, because these nerves control everything in the body, it’s also normal for other symptoms to occur, which you may not associate with the back. I’ll be giving you some examples of these symptoms in a moment, but let’s first discuss cervical disc disease.

This will also cause the space where the nerves exit the spine to become smaller, and once again, you have pressure on the nerves.

In the case of a cervical discs, the most common symptoms you may experience are pain in the neck, shoulder pain, arms, or hands (you may also experience burning, pins and needles, or numbness in these areas), headaches, chest pain, thyroid problems (which could lead to weight issues), blurry vision, and ringing in the ears.

Although one may have never associated these body regions with the neck, these symptoms will often occur because these areas of the body are controlled by the nerves of the neck.

The causes of these conditions are very different. A bulging disc in the neck usually develops due to an injury (such as a car accident, lifting something too heavy, a fall, etc.). It’s also possible for an individual to be born with a genetic predisposition for weaker spinal discs, which would lead to the condition.

The cause of cervical disc disease is wear-and-tear over time. However, the start of this condition is also often trauma, because injuries to the back that are not treated properly will cause the spine to deteriorate more quickly.

I want to stress that this condition is not age related! Most people associate arthritis with age, which simply isn’t the truth. Arthritis is usually localized to joints that have been used too much (such as the hands, knees, shoulders, and spine).

If you look at degenerative disc disease of a cervical disc, you will see that it is usually only located in 1 or 2 discs – not every one of them. So, I ask you this – if cervical disc disease (arthritis) were simply due to age, wouldn’t you see it in EVERY cervical discs? After all, they’re all the same age, aren’t they?

The reason I bring this up is because people often use their age to “give up” on trying to experience relief – they just accept it. There are plenty of treatment options for cervical discs pain, and we’ll talk about that next.

With either of these conditions, most doctors will recommend the same therapies – medications (usually pain relievers and muscle relaxers), injections (such as cortisone and epidurals), physical therapy, and surgery (as a last resort).

Unfortunately, the success rates of these traditional treatments are often very low. However, there are a number of other alternative treatments that are more successful for cervical discs pain. Semi Supine Position And Back Pain Relief

Yes, it's true, a simple method of lying down on the floor for 10 minutes can alleviate the pain of chronic back pain, as well as the temporary discomfort we feel from poor posture or prolonged sitting positions..

Daily practice of semi supine brings many benefits; and best of all, it's easy. The only thing you need is a quiet room (nice if it's warm), and a couple of novels.

It's not just any old way of lying down: it is a particular posture called semisupine. It is part of the Alexander Technique, and it is widely used by other disciplines, such as Yoga.

What Is Semi-Supine?

Semi-supine is simply lying down on your back with your feet flat on the floor and your knees raised. The knees and feet are placed approximately one and a half hip widths apart.

You may need to experiment with how far apart you have your knees, till you find out what feels most comfortable and stable for you.

Your head needs to be supported by something firm. A good choice for this is a phonebook or a couple of paperbacks; and a hard-stuffed cushion is also fine.

The support needs to be at a height that draws the cervical (neck) vertebrae into a flat alignment.

The benefits of the posture come from having the spine flat against the floor. You can help this by sliding your hands under your hips or buttocks and pushing them away. Whilst laying in semi supine, you can place your hands near the hips, on your lower abdomen.

How to Work With The Posture.

There are two things to maintain while lying in the posture: being relaxed and being aware.

When you lie down and relax, there's a natural tendency to fade off into sleep or semi-sleep.

So an important part of the method is to keep bringing your awareness back to how your body is feeling. You can give attention to how your body is lying against the floor.

You can give attention to which parts of your spine are in contact with the floor, and then think of your body sinking into the floor at these places. Just think of your body being soft and relaxed and sinking into the floor. It's like just giving yourself up to gravity.

After a few minutes you may find that you need to make some small adjustments as your back begins to relax and lengthen.

A session of 20 minutes in semi supine will give the full therapeutic benefit. But just 5 or 10 minutes is still really effective in relieving pain and aches.

If you exercise this once a day that's great (you can do it more often if you wish); and three times a week is still beneficial.

Get Up Slowly..

When coming out of semi supine, don't just leap up and go.. You need to roll mindfully out of the posture, rest a while, and then sit up slowly with awareness.

The method is to move one arm out to the side and then roll in that direction.

Benefits:

The main outcome of semi supine position is to relax the spine, as it settles into a flatter shape. This helps to backbones and relieve the pressure on nerves that is causing your pain. By releasing and freeing up the neck your head can rotate better, relative to the neck,and the spine can lengthen.

Whenever we're standing for a while, the discs between the vertebrae get squashed. Lying in semi-supine for 15-20 minutes helps to re-establish the back's optimum alignment. The discs are able to fill with fluid, and that restores their ability to keep the spine flexible and working smoothly. A few minutes in semi-supine can be remarkably restorative. It's astonishing how much physical and mental revitalization can be achieved in a short period of time.

Postures that we habitually take up, or work in, set up patterns of rigidity and tension. This results in our muscles not being able to function smoothly.

Tension reduces our efficiency, quite simply because muscles are working against the added load of tension. That takes up energy. So, another benefit of relaxation through semi supine is: more energy.
