In fact, an interesting fact about the discs of the spine that you may not be aware of is that they are not able to experience pain sensations. This may sound crazy to you at first, because as you know, this can be a very painful problem to deal with.

But if you think about it, it makes sense that a disc wouldn’t experience pain, because they are absorbing shock all the time. If they could experience pain, you would be hurting all the time, with every movement you make!

So, what actually causes the pain in the case of a herniated disc? It’s actually the pressure on the affected nerve. Even more important than the pain, though, is the other parts of the body that can be affected by this problem.

Because the spinal nerves control everything in the body, pressure on a nerve will cause the body part being controlled by that nerve to stop working like it’s supposed to.

A good example of this would be a herniated disc in the lower back. The nerves that would be affected here control the legs, so it’s very common for an individual with this condition to experience pain traveling down the legs, as well as weakness in the legs.

I’ve even seen cases where the pressure on the nerves in the low back becomes so strong that an individual literally drops to their knees because they’ve lost so much strength in their legs.

Now, before we talk about the different types of bulging disc surgery available, let me just say one thing, because people often ask if there is a way for them to tell if surgery is their only option, and there is.

There are only a couple of situations that actually require surgery right away. The first is if you have a herniated disc in your low back, and you are losing control of your bowel and/or bladder. This is very serious and usually calls for surgery right away.

The other circumstance that usually requires surgery is when an individual begins to have weakness in the extremities (either the arms or legs). This is a sign that the nerves have so much pressure on them that they are beginning to fall asleep. This is also a very serious sign.

One thing I need to say about that second circumstance, though, is that the weakness I’m referring to is an objective weakness that a physician can only find through a proper examination. You may feel like you are having weakness, but unless it shows up on the exam, it may not be serious enough to consider surgery.

In other words, your physician is the only one who will know if you have a true weakness that calls for surgery.

Now let’s talk about the different types of bulging disc neurosurgery commonly utilized today. Even though there is a lot of new research in this field, the two most commonly used forms of surgery involve either removing the bulging part of the disc to remove the pressure from the nerve, or removing the entire disc and fusing the vertebrae above and below the disc together.

With both of these types of surgery, the success rate is very low – only about 16% according to the medical journal Spine. Also, these often lead to other complications in the future. With a fusion, the joints above and below the fusion have to work extra hard to make up for the loss of movement, so those joints tend to wear out more quickly, and the problem will eventually spread throughout the spine.

In the case of a disc resection, where they remove the part of the disc that is bulging, the problem usually comes back within 5 years, because if you are removing a part of the disc, it creates a weakness in the disc, and also causes scar tissue to develop over time.

Many people ask me about disc replacement back surgery, and other recent discoveries in this field, but at this point in time, these forms of surgery are not as commonly utilized. I believe there is a lot of promise in this field, but they really haven’t perfected this technology yet.

So, here’s the bottom line with bulging disc neurosurgery – always view this as a last resort. The success rate is very low, and unless you fit into one of the categories that absolutely calls for surgery, you should try everything else available first.

In fact, one of the things you may not know about a spinal disc is that they can not feel pain, which sounds strange at first, but if you think about it, it makes sense considering the fact that they’re absorbing shock all day.

So, it’s important to understand that all of the pain is actually coming from the pressure on the nerve. This is truly the reason that most treatments for herniated discs are not effective for the long term – they are all primarily designed to address the painful nerve, which sounds good on the surface, but they do not really get to the cause of the issue, which is the bulging disc.

For example, most doctors will begin by recommending muscle relaxers and pain relieving medications, which are typically effective about 30% of the time. The reason for this is because they numb the nerve, but don’t do anything for the disc herniation.

Physical therapy is also usually recommended, and although I’m a supporter of physical therapy, with this problem, it often doesn’t provide a long term result. The same is true for pain injections (such as cortisone and epidurals), which usually provide relief about 50% of the time, but the pain usually returns.

Surgery has the lowest success rate of all (16% according to the medical journal Spine), which is why most doctors will try everything else before recommending surgery. Not only that, surgery is also temporary, and the pain usually re-occurs within 5 years of having the surgery if you’re lucky enough to experience relief to begin with.

This is why most have a hard time finding a treatment for a back disc that will result in lasting relief. The good news is that there are actually a number of treatment of a herniated disc that are effective, and truthfully, it often takes a combination of specific treatments to lead to the end result you are hoping for.

In this article, I’m going to give you 3 simple treatment of a herniated disc that can be done from home, but understand this is only part of the solution – I’ll give you a helpful resource at the end of the article if you’d like to learn more. Each treatment for a back disc that I’m about to recommend needs to be followed as I outline for best results.

The first recommendation I’ll share with you is to use ice. Most people want to use heat with this problem, which is really the worst thing you can do. Heat will aggravate the nerve more, and cause additional swelling in the affected area, which also leads to more pain.

Ice will numb the affected nerve, and slow the inflammatory process, which will result in faster relief. If you want to see the fastest results with ice, you should use real ice rather than a substitute (such as frozen vegetables), and you should place the ice right on the skin over the painful area.

Leave the ice on for 15 minutes maximum, or until you experience numbness, whichever occurs first. Then, repeat the ice treatment every hour – it will require 3 to 4 treatments before you experience any relief, and it usually takes about 3 days to experience a considerable difference in your pain level.

The next treatment for a back disc I will share with you is actually an easy exercise using a therapy ball. A therapy ball is one of those large balls you see in health clubs or physical therapy clinics. People often use them for stomach exercises, however, the exercise I will recommend for you is actually very easy.

Simply sit on the ball and gently bounce up and down for 5 minutes every day. Remember how we were discussing earlier how the jelly in the disc is where the nutrients and oxygen are stored for healing? This exercise will pump every disc in the spine, which pumps new nutrients and oxygen into the disc for faster healing.

The final treatment of a herniated disc I will share today is another exercise using a mini-trampoline. You can find a small trampoline (usually about 4 feet wide) at most sports stores, and you simply want to stand in the center of the trampoline and march in place for 5 minutes each day.

Don’t jump when doing this exercise – marching will force the body to re-balance the muscles in the entire spine, which takes a lot of pressure off the injured disc. This exercise will go a long way for not only alleviating the pain, but also for healing the bulging disc.

There can be a wide variety of causes for severe lower back pain and lower back pain kidney. I think the most annoying thing an adult can go through next to sciatic pain cures is a sinus infection. But what about when your kids get one? What can you do?

Sinus infections and drainage might seem like common cold at first. The child coughs, sneezes and gets a red nose, like in cold. But the difference is that sinus attack last longer than common cold. Sinuses are spaces in the bones of the face and the head which are filled with air. They are exactly located on both sides of the nose, behind the nasal cavity, within the forehead, and at the back & in between the eyes. Sinuses grow in pairs and there are four pairs of them. Sinuses begin to develop in the mother womb and grow till twenty years of age. As children have an incompletely developed immune system, they catch cold infection more frequently.

The actual purposes of the sinuses are not known, but scientists say that they make the head lightweight as these air pockets are filled with light air. If these air pockets were to be replaced with something solid, the head will become heavier. The sinuses also provide tone and depth to the voice. That is the reason why the voice sounds funny when a person catches a cold or gets a sinus attack. The sinuses are covered with a thin and moist tissue layer known as a mucous membrane. These membranes are responsible for adding moisture to the air breathed in. They also produce mucus, a sticky liquid filled in the nose, also called snot. This sticky liquid catches germs and dust, which are carried by the air, before they enter the body. The mucus membranes are covered with cilia or microscopic hair. These cilia move to and fro to encourage the flow of the mucus out of the nose and back inside. When the sinuses are infected, the membranes produce more mucus and become swollen and irritated.

When a person catches cold, the virus harms the cilia and the mucus doesn’t get swept back in. This is how a runny nose is developed. The mucus lining swells within the nose. This narrows or completely blocks the minute opening of the sinus into nose. Because of this, the stickier and thicker mucus produced get trapped in the sinuses. This stagnant mucus becomes the breeding ground for virus, bacteria and fungi. If the common cold stretches for over two weeks, the sinusitis condition develops. This condition is sinus infection. Acute sinusitis is sinusitis stretching over two weeks or so. But when it crosses three months, it is called chronic sinusitis. The child can get mild fever along with acute sinusitis. There is no fever associated with chronic sinusitis and the symptoms are less intense. The symptoms of sinusitis or sinus attacks are mild fever, bad breath, continuous nasal discharge, puffy eyes, and daytime cough. Some children also experience low energy, crankiness, headache and pain behind the forehead, cheeks and eyes.

When the doctor is approached for help, he/she will check throat, nose and ears for infection. The sinuses are also checked. The doctor will press or tap on the cheeks and forehead. If bacteria are responsible for causing the infection, the child will be given antibiotics to kill the bacteria. The antibiotics will show their effect within few days itself. A nasal spray or decongestant can also be used to treat blocked and runny nose. If it is chronic sinusitis, the antibiotics need to be taken for a longer time period, like for about a few weeks, in order to kill the bacteria completely. The child shouldn’t stop the course of medicine if he/she isn’t seeing any improvement in the condition. The doctor should be contacted for further instructions. In this case, a surgery is an alternative. The doctor will ask the child to get a CT scan of the sinuses.

The best thing about sinusitis is that it isn’t contagious. So if a kid is infected with it, he/she can still go to school and have fun with the rest of the kids. But kids who have sinus problem should stay away from environmental pollutants and allergies, which can trigger the condition again in them.

If you think about it, though, it makes sense that the discs of the spine wouldn’t be able to feel pain because of their purpose of absorbing shock. So, if this is true, what actually causes all the pain with this condition?

Well, if you were to look at the spine, what you would see is that the nerves of the spine are actually located right behind each spinal disc, which is usually where they will bulge. Because of this, the herniated disc in the neck will usually apply pressure on the nerve, which can be very painful.

In addition to the pain, a herniated disc in the neck can also cause quite a bit of disability because the nerves of the spine control everything in the body, and if there’s pressure on a nerve, it will stop communicating with the body properly and lead to problems with whatever the involved nerve is controlling.

The second major condition that can occur with a neck disc is called cervical disc disease (which is a form of arthritis that occurs in the disc). In this case, the jelly in the center of the disc will start to become dehydrated (which means it loses water). This causes the disc to flatten, which also causes pressure to be applied to the nerve in that location.

So, if the main cause of the pain in each of these cases is the affected nerve, what types of symptoms may occur if you develop a problem with a neck disc?

In addition to neck pain, it’s also very common for a person to suffer with headaches, shoulder, arm, and/or hand pain, weakness in the arms, numbness in the arms, chest pains, thyroid problems (which usually results in weight issues), ringing in the ears, and vision problems.

These symptoms are common because these are the parts of the body that are affected by the nerves in the neck.

If you’re experiencing pain from a neck disc problem, there are a number of things you can do for relief. Most doctors will recommend medications (usually a combination of muscle relaxers and pain relievers), pain injections (such as cortisone or epidurals), physical therapy, and surgery (as a last resort).

However, it is important to note that these treatments usually don’t provide lasting relief because they are primarily focused on numbing the involved nerve to affect the pain levels. Although this may sound good on the surface, it’s important to remember that the cause of the pain is actually the injured disc, so if you don’t get the disc to heal, the pain returns when you discontinue those treatments.

Alternative treatments are also available for these conditions. Treatments such as chiropractic, massage therapy, and acupuncture have all been found to be helpful with these conditions.

One thing I should mention at this point, however, is that neck disc conditions are usually more complicated and difficult to heal because of the lack of blood going to them. Because of this, I have found that it’s often a combination of treatments that provide the best results for these conditions.

You need to be patient with the healing process, because it can take anywhere from 2 to 5 years for a disc to heal completely with the right combination of treatments, so try your best to not get frustrated (although I know that’s easier said than done when you’re suffering).

Also, because these nerves control everything in the body, it’s also normal for other symptoms to occur, which you may not associate with the back. I’ll be giving you some examples of these symptoms in a moment, but let’s first discuss cervical disc disease.

This will also cause the space where the nerves exit the spine to become smaller, and once again, you have pressure on the nerves.

In both of these cases, the symptoms can be very similar because of the nerves affected.

In the case of a cervical discs, the most common symptoms you may experience are pain in the neck, shoulder pain, arms, or hands (you may also experience burning, pins and needles, or numbness in these areas), headaches, chest pain, thyroid problems (which could lead to weight issues), blurry vision, and ringing in the ears.

Although one may have never associated these body regions with the neck, these symptoms will often occur because these areas of the body are controlled by the nerves of the neck.

The causes of these conditions are very different. A bulging disc in the neck usually develops due to an injury (such as a car accident, lifting something too heavy, a fall, etc.). It’s also possible for an individual to be born with a genetic predisposition for weaker spinal discs, which would lead to the condition.

The cause of cervical disc disease is wear-and-tear over time. However, the start of this condition is also often trauma, because injuries to the back that are not treated properly will cause the spine to deteriorate more quickly.

I want to stress that this condition is not age related! Most people associate arthritis with age, which simply isn’t the truth. Arthritis is usually localized to joints that have been used too much (such as the hands, knees, shoulders, and spine).

If you look at degenerative disc disease of a cervical disc, you will see that it is usually only located in 1 or 2 discs – not every one of them. So, I ask you this – if cervical disc disease (arthritis) were simply due to age, wouldn’t you see it in EVERY cervical discs? After all, they’re all the same age, aren’t they?

The reason I bring this up is because people often use their age to “give up” on trying to experience relief – they just accept it. There are plenty of treatment options for cervical discs pain, and we’ll talk about that next.

With either of these conditions, most doctors will recommend the same therapies – medications (usually pain relievers and muscle relaxers), injections (such as cortisone and epidurals), physical therapy, and surgery (as a last resort).

Unfortunately, the success rates of these traditional treatments are often very low. However, there are a number of other alternative treatments that are more successful for cervical discs pain. Alternative treatments such as chiropractic, massage therapy, acupuncture, and nutritional supplementation are among the best options for these conditions.
